Holbrook stresses grad programs significance

Ohio State President Karen A. Holbrook testified March 18 before a subcommittee of the Ohio House of Representatives about the importance of graduate programs in Ohio. Holbrook spoke to the House Finance and Appropriation Higher Education Subcommittee on behalf of the Inter-University Council, an association of the state’s public universities. Full Story

Inmate’s execution might be put on hold

If determined mentally disabled by the state, death row inmate Ernest Martin may avoid his execution scheduled for June 18. In a new response filed Tuesday in the Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas, the Ohio Public Defender’s office claimed that Martin is mentally disabled. Full Story

Columbus may soon be a much quieter place. The sound of car stereos and loud neighbors will be silenced if Columbus City Council passes a revamped noise ordinance. Full Story

VP of research at OSU heads to Northwestern

The head of research is leaving after three years of service to Ohio State. C. Bradley Moore, vice president of research at OSU, has accepted a position overseeing research at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. Full Story

One week cut out of USG spring campaigns

Undergraduate Student Government candidates will get a breather this quarter. In fact, it will be a week-long breather. This year campaigning will not start the first day of spring quarter, said Sara Topy, USG President Eddie Pauline’s chief of staff. Instead, candidates will start campaigning April 7, the Monday of the second week of the quarter. Full Story

OSU students split over war

“Support Our Troops” and “No More War” are popular messages that many Americans are seeing these days, given the situation with Iraq. According to a FOX News/Opinion Dynamics Poll taken March 26, 78 percent of those polled support the United States taking military action to disarm Iraq and removing Iraqi President Saddam Hussein from power. Here at OSU, the percentage of those supporting military action may not be that high in some student’s opinions. “I would say the majority of OSU students are against the war,” said Matt Lefferts, a senior in family resource management. “There are definitely a wide variety of opinions given the diversity here at OSU.” Full Story

Club crew matches varsity commitment

Early morning practices, exhausting two-a-days, year-long strength and conditioning training are no longer solely associated with varsity football. Instead, it is also a part of Ohio State’s club crew team. Full Story
