Killers part of OSU’s past
Halloween: A time for ghost stories and urban legends. Most people on campus have heard of the ghost of Oxley Hall - the woman who still roams the corridors of the building more than a half a century after her death. But some might not have heard the one about the serial killer in Morrill Tower. Unfortunately for the students living in the 23-story residence hall, the legend of the Cannon Drive Cannibal is fact, not fiction.
Trick-or-treat with The King
This weekend, as night fell on Ohio State and Halloween crept in, there were more than ghouls and goblins running amok on campus. There were kings, Vikings and the Seven Deadly Sins.
Women’s soccer left out of tournament despite win
The Ohio State women’s soccer team won the battle but lost the war Friday, using a four-goal second half to defeat Morehead State 5-0 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium only to find out after the game it did not qualify for the Big Ten tournament.
Buckeyes win with late goals
The Ohio State men’s soccer team (9-6-2, 2-2-1 Big Ten) continued its late season run of scoring two goals in the second half to knock off Northwestern (8-5-2, 1-3-1 Big Ten) 2-1 Friday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
Women’s volleyball team splits at home
The No. 19 Ohio State women’s volleyball team split two games on a home stand over the weekend. OSU defeated Northwestern 3-1 Friday and fell to No. 11 Wisconsin 3-0 Saturday.
Offense finally beginning to look up
Imagine, if you will, a quarterback with a 9-2 career record as a starter, a touchdown-to-interception ratio of 18-6 and 10 career rushing touchdowns. Actually, you don’t have to. We already have that guy, and once again junior Troy Smith showed why he’s the starting quarterback. Some fans have continued to clamor for Justin Zwick to take over in a spread offense - and some have even wished for Todd Boeckman to see the field - but Smith has continued to lead the Buckeyes to points and wins.
Find new music in Bassmint
Roll over Napster and iTunes there’s a new kid on the music download block. It’s name is Bassmint Music, and it aims to shake things up both for major labels as well as other download sites.
Improving boys’ scores
The reports are in, and the news is not good. It is pretty much beyond dispute that males are getting dumber. Well, maybe not dumber, but their relative academic performance has been slipping. More females are in the top 20 percent of their high school class and, even more alarmingly, females now display higher competency in reading at every single grade level.
Plastic bag obsession
Today’s lesson in education through taxation comes from the Irish Republic, where in 2002 the government implemented a 15-cent consumer tax for each plastic bag issued at grocery store checkouts. In the first year the tax was in effect, the number of distributed bags dropped by 95 percent, and millions of dollars have been generated by the tax for environmental clean-up.
Happy October 31
Students at Underwood Elementary School in Boston are the latest casualties in the war against oversensitive, politically correct mercenaries. Apparently, a handful of parents complained about the school’s traditional Halloween celebrations and said they would not send their children to school if it continued.
