Wooden pencils face a dull problem

As L.A. Gear and JNCO Jeans have shown, everything, at some point, goes out of style. But as the second month of 2006 rolls around, have ordinary wooden pencils faded out of popular culture just as much as light-up shoes and big-pocketed jeans?

Many options, opinions on birth control

Birth control options are not a cut-and-dry decision, and it has become a scorching political issue, especially with the possible advent of a change to abortion laws.

Gov. Taft proposes new curriculum

It will take more than a high school diploma to get into a four-year Ohio university or college if Gov. Bob Taft’s new plan, Ohio Core, is passed by the state legislature. Under Ohio Core, before a high school graduate can even be considered for admission, he or she must complete four years of English and math, including Algebra II, three years of social studies and science, including physics, biology and chemistry and two years of a foreign language.

Bucks stomp Rattlers 95-53

Sullinger anchored the Buckeye offense with a career-high 24 points as Ohio State (15-3, 14-3 Big Ten) finished its nonconference schedule with an easy 95-53 win over Florida A&M (10-11, 6-2) at the Schottenstein Center Monday night. “That’s a hell of a team we just played,” said Florida A&M coach Mike Gillespie. “If they shoot the ball that well every night out, which they have, they’re as good as anybody we’ve played.”

The Ohio State women’s gymnastics team (3-2, 0-2 Big Ten) is improving under second-year coach Carey Fagan. A year after stumbling to a 2-4 start, the Buckeyes started this season with three straight wins against Ball State, Bowling Green and Kent State. The only hiccups came the last two weeks, against No. 25 Michigan State University and the No. 4 University of Michigan.

Women’s tennis struggles, loses to ND

The road did not treat the Ohio State women’s tennis team well in their first trip outside of Columbus this season. Traveling to No. 22 Notre Dame (2-0), the Buckeyes were shutout 7-0 by the Fighting Irish over the weekend.

I present to the student body a protest against unintelligable research literature and bone-dry academic discourse.

Action Action conjures bad memories of ’80s

Thanks to “The Wedding Singer” and the VH1 series “I Love the ’80s,” our country’s collective knowledge of that glorious decade has been whittled down to precious little. All that’s left of that era is gaudy pop-culture kitsch. Action Action’s latest album, “An Army of Shapes Between Wars,” represents this culture.
