Celebrating a century

Yellow pages and smeared ink symbolize 100 years of the Index, bound and set aside for future generations.

The 2008-09 volume marks the 100th anniversary of the newspaper, but it wasn't always called the Index. The paper's flag has been adjusted with each name change the University has undergone (going by such titles as the Kirksville Normal School Index and the Northeast Missouri Teacher's School Index).

Writing styles have changed, and so has the content. The Index no longer advertises 10-cent hamburgers, and reporters now cover close to $4 gas prices. The look may have changed, but a century later the paper continues to hit newsstands every Thursday.
