Registered students should research all local candidates
More than 1,000 Truman students have registered to vote in this county since the first of the year. I think this is a wonderful thing, but I would like to encourage them to research the local candidates because they could have an extreme impact on these local elections.
An example of this is the race for sheriff. Leonard Clark, the current sheriff, has done an outstanding job.
His opponent claims to be the most qualified candidate because of his experience as a driver’s license examiner in Texas and as the Adair county janitor and maintenance man.
Clark was an outstanding deputy sheriff in this county for more than a decade. He was shot in the line of duty and has played a key role in many cases. He was a full-time marine instead of a part-time National Guard member, and he has done an outstanding job as sheriff.
Clark has served this community well in the past, and I think he still is the best man to lead this community as sheriff.
A lot of improvements have been made in the sheriff’s office since he was elected. We now have a county-wide 911 with a centralized dispatch, at least one deputy on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week and a brand new jail that is much safer than the old one. Clark did not do this alone, but he has been a key player, and his leadership has helped improve the safety of everyone in this county.
His opponent is better at creative resume writing, but he seems to be prone to exaggeration, and his math and/or memory skills are sadly lacking when it comes to totaling his years of experience or his training hours.
I am biased because Clark is a friend of mine and we have worked together for many years, but I would encourage you to find out the whole truth and vote for a man who has proved he actually can do the job.
