Mark Gole is no longer the men's and women's head swimming coach.

Athletic Director Jerry Wollmering said Gole will be taking a job with William Jewell University in Kansas City, Mo., and his withdrawal from Truman is effective immediately, according to a press release from the Truman Athletics Department.

Assistant coach Tim Sandfort also will be leaving Truman's swimming program at the end of December to work with Dell Computers in Austin, Texas, according to the release.

"It is disappointing to be losing our coaching staff at this important time during the season," Wollmering said in the release, which gave no indication as to who will be the next swimming head coach.

Gole did not immediately respond to multiple Index messages left on his cell phone. Wollmering and Sandfort also were not immediately available for comment.

Gole was in the middle of his sixth season as the men's and women's head coach. The Bulldogs had already competed in five meets this season. They are scheduled to swim in five more including the NCAA Div. II Championships next semester.

Gole will become William Jewell's first swimming head coach since the school last had a swimming program in 1990-91. William Jewell currently competes in the NAIA but has begun a three-year process to gain Div. II acceptance. The school will compete in the Div. II Great Lakes Valley Conference in 2011-12.

In Gole's first season with the Bulldogs the women's team won its sixth straight national championship. The men finished 11th at the national meet that year, the highest any men's team finished while Gole was coach.

The women won another national championship in 2008. In five seasons with the women Gole led them to two national championships and three more top-five finishes.

The men never finished better than 15th after Gole's first season and sent one swimmer to nationals last spring.Gole coached several all-time great Truman swimmers including Kate Aherne, Molly Polette and Jason Stokes.

The Index will have continued coverage of this story as information becomes available and in the next printed edition.
