Cutting Edge Supplements, a nutritional supplements store, had their grand opening last Monday.

The store, located at 516 N. Baltimore St., sells whey protein powders, weight gainers for people trying to build muscle in a short amount of time, joint healing products, natural testosterone boosters, weight loss products, muscle recovery products and pre-workout powders to get people energized for the workout, CES owner Desmond Bloss said.

Rugby coach Bill Sexton, a physiology professor at A.T. Still University, said he is leery about the use of performance-enhancing supplements.

"They can be very dangerous, especially for the average Joe who doesn't know where or what he's using it for. He can overdose very easily," Sexton said. "The performance-enhancing ability of many of these is really just a claim and not necessarily proven. … I think more people will suffer the ill effects than gain any significant benefits."

Bloss said he personally has tested most of the products in the store and he knows they work. He said he educates his customers about the use of all his products before he sells them the products.

Business has been slower than anticipated, Bloss said. This was due to the weather and so many overcast days lately, he said.

"Those kind of days aren't great for that kind of business because people don't feel like being active," Bloss said. "Weather has a lot to do with this industry."

Bloss also owns a CES store in Chillecothe, Mo,. Bloss said he picked Kirksville for his new location because there was no supplement business here after GNC left town a couple of years ago.
