A 16-year-old Kirksville High School student was taken into protective custody Tuesday after the student threatened to harm themself while armed with scissors and a razor blade during school hours, according to an Oct. 12 press release from the Kirksville Police Department.
With help from School Resource Officer Sara Holzmeier, no one was harmed.
Kirksville Police Department was notified at approximately 11:20 a.m. that the school was on "hold status," and the classroom with the student in question and another classroom nearby were evacuated.
Holzmeier is trained in negotiation and was able to convince the student to "abandon their weapons and surrender," according to the press release.
"This successful outcome was a great example of collaboration between the police and school officials," Kirksville Police Chief Jim Hughes said, according to the press release.
No additional information will be released about the incident because of the student's age.
